About Ponsonby Rugby Club Founded in 1874, Ponsonby Rugby Club is Auckland’s longest-standing grassroots rugby club and one of New Zealand’s most successful. With a proud history spanning over 150 years, Ponsonby has set the benchmark in Auckland Club Rugby, winning the Gallaher Shield 35 times and the regional championship 45 times – more than any other club. We have produced more All Blacks than any other club in the country, alongside an ever-growing number of Black Ferns, underscoring our legacy of excellence. Today, we are home to 50 junior teams (Under 3–13) and 10 senior teams, including Premier Men, Premier Women, Under 21, Women’s Development, Weight Restricted, and Social grades – proudly featuring New Zealand’s only “gay” and inclusive rugby team. Every weekend, more than 1,000 players represent Ponsonby Rugby across Auckland, supported by hundreds of volunteers, coaches, and families.
